FSMB updates its Guidelines for the Use of Opioids to treat Chronic Pain

Date: April 28, 2017
Source: FSMB

The FSMB 2017 Guidelines take into consideration the CDC Guidelines of April 2016, and makes clear that the guidelines focus on overal safe and evidence-based prescribing of opioids for the treatment of chronic, non-cancer pain. The FSMB also makes clear that its guideines DO NOT CREATE any specific standard of care, because the standard depends on a fact-specific totality of cricumstances surrounding specific quality of care events. This is a significant statement. Physicians and other prescribers should read these guidelines, determine whether their licensing board has adopted these materials, and conduct a self-audit to ensure that all opioid prescriptions are issued for a legitimate medical purpose while acting in the usual course of professional practice. This is the federal standard for prescribing controlled substances, and medical experts in federal and state cases will make direct and indirect references to the FSMB's position.
